In the midst of a leadership showdown, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah visited the home of Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar in Bengaluru on Tuesday. Shivakumar, joined by his brother and former Member of Parliament D.K. Suresh, gladly received the CM, handing him a bouquet and a shawl as a handshake gesture.
The two leaders met for breakfast at Shivakumar’s private residence in Sadashivanagar. Security was tightened and streets were sealed to ensure a smooth visit, while D.K. Suresh declined to comment initially. Before Siddaramaiah’s arrival, Shivakumar’s smile and casual greetings to the press outside his house hinted at a cordial atmosphere.
This second breakfast gathering is poised to reinforce their shared commitment to the party’s unity ahead of the Assembly’s winter session, slated to start on December 8 in Belagavi. Both leaders have publicly affirmed that they will respect the resolution of the party’s high command regarding the leadership dispute. Shivakumar, a leading candidate for the CM post, asserted that the leadership battle would not fracture the organization.
Central to the meeting’s spirit was a nod to “breakfast diplomacy,” a strategy fully endorsed by the national Congress leadership. Shivakumar hinted that the breakfast spread would feature the “naati koli” dish, a classic plate that Siddaramaiah is known to enjoy. On X, he announced that the CM’s visit tomorrow would be a chance to discuss the state’s future and reaffirm their teamwork.
Siddaramaiah, too, had said earlier that he had not yet received a formal invitation over the phone but welcomed the opportunity to attend. He noted that Shivakumar had suggested a Tuesday breakfast after a prior meeting at the CM’s residence on November 30. The CM added that he was open to the invitation and hoped it would come soon, reiterating his readiness to join and reinforce their partnership.
Shivakumar, who also serves as the state Congress chief and a primary contender for the CM role, mentioned after last Saturday’s breakfast that both he and Siddaramaiah were “together” and committed to following the party’s top directives. He later said that the CM would visit his home for dinner within the next couple of days, reflecting a mutual willingness to collaborate.
When asked about the invitation to his home, Shivakumar framed it as a matter between the two leaders, dismissing accusations of factionalism. He stressed that the breakfast meeting was a response to media pressure and that he and the CM were working in harmony, “like brothers.” He further described the occasion as a demonstration that no deep divisions exist within the party.
On the same day, Shivakumar posted on X to celebrate Hanuman Jayanti, praising Lord Anjaneya as “the embodiment of truth, courage, devotion, and a spirit of service.” He offered his heartfelt greetings to the people of Karnataka and expressed hopes that the blessings of Maruti Raya would continue to remove obstacles for everyone.
