A Border Security Force (BSF) rookie in Tripura opened fire to protect himself after a group of 15‑20 smugglers tried to snatch his gun during a patrol at the Kalamchera Border Outpost (BOP) on Friday night.
The patrol spotted the smugglers heading for a smuggling run near the BOP around 8:45 pm. When the BSF trooper stepped in to stop the illegal activity, the group surrounded him and attacked. They also tried to grab his rifle.
In self‑defence, the BSF jawan fired three rounds. One of the attackers, Suman Mia—son of Abul Kasim from Karalatala village—pulled a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed straight to GB Hospital in Agartala, where his condition is listed as serious.
The incident was reported to the BSF headquarters at Frontier HQ, Salbagan, Agartala. Earlier that week, the same BSF unit had thwarted several smuggling attempts along the Indo‑Bangladesh border. They seized foreign‑made contraband worth ₹8.5 lakh, including cigarettes and cosmetics, and rescued 17 cattle from different locations across Tripura.
The BSF patrols are operating out of the Border Out Post at Rangoti, under Police Station Irani in Unakoti district, saying their focus remains on preventing cross‑border smuggling and protecting local communities.
