In Kolkata, a single judge from the Calcutta High Court gave former BJP MP Arjun Singh temporary protection from police action on Tuesday. The decision covers a swarm of FIRs that police in West Bengal filed against him at several stations across the state.
The judge, Justice Shampa Dutt (Paul), heard the case in detail and granted Singh interim relief until November 10. The court will hold another hearing on the same day.
Singh, who won the Lok Sabha seat from Barrackpore in 2019, was not surprised by the move. In March, he warned that a “nepal‑style” mass uprising could break out in West Bengal at any moment. West Bengal Police quickly registered ten FIRs in his name across different stations. Many of the earlier FIRs were also under the Barrackpore Police Commissioner’s jurisdiction.
Before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Singh switched back to the BJP after Trinamool Congress refused to nominate him for Barrackpore. He still lost the 2024 fight to Trinamool’s Partha Bhowmik.
The High Court’s order means police cannot take coercive action against Singh in any of the pending FIRs for the next few weeks. Further legal moves will be decided in upcoming court sessions.
