Chennai – The chief coordinator of the Tamil nationalist party Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), Se Seeman, faces a new criminal case in Chennai. Police have charged him under sections of the Indian Penal Code after his interview on a YouTube channel earlier last year sparked outrage.
In the November interview, Seeman criticised the judiciary, legislature and Parliament. Many viewers said his words undermined India’s democratic institutions. Lawyer Charles Alexander filed a police complaint, accusing Seeman of stirring division and disrespecting the nation’s core values.
When the police did not act, Alexander took his grievance to the Egmore Magistrate Court. The court dismissed the request to register a case. In response, Alexander moved the Madras High Court.
The High Court found Seeman’s remarks seemed inflammatory and potentially capable of causing public unrest. It ordered the police to file charges and start a formal investigation. Acting on this order, the Thirumangalam Police filed a case accusing Seeman of “promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race or identity and making statements likely to disturb public peace.”
Investigators will review the full transcript and video of the interview to determine whether Seeman deliberately provoked or insulted any section of society. Officials said they will take further action once the inquiry finishes.
The NTK chief is no stranger to controversy. Known for his fiery rhetoric, Seeman has faced prior backlash for remarks that many felt were beyond the pale. Party representatives have not yet commented on the latest lawsuit.
