CBI Busts Cyber Fraud Ring in Nashik: Two Arrested for Duping British Nationals
In a major crackdown on cyber fraud, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two brothers in Nashik for running illegal call centers that targeted British nationals. The duo, Ganesh and Shyam Kamankar, tricked victims by posing as insurance agents and government officials, a CBI official revealed on Sunday.
The fraudsters operated under the guise of Swagan Business Solutions Pvt. Ltd., employing around 60 people across two shady call centers. They used advanced tools like Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), spoofed phone numbers, and fake documents to fool people into sharing credit or debit card details. Victims ended up paying for bogus insurance policies that didn’t exist.
The CBI kicked off the investigation on September 11 after a complaint exposed the scam. It accused four individuals, unknown public servants, and others of running these Nashik-based illegal call centers. The brothers specifically impersonated insurance agents and officials to cheat British citizens out of their money.
CBI teams swung into action with searches in Nashik and Kalyan in Thane district. They seized key evidence, including victim data, scripts for fake insurance pitches, eight mobile phones, eight computer systems and servers, plus Rs 5 lakh in unexplained cash. Investigators say the fraud money flowed through PayPal and bank accounts controlled by the accused.
This bust highlights the growing menace of cyber fraud in India, where scammers use tech tricks to target international victims. The arrested brothers now face charges for cheating and running unauthorized operations.
Separate Bribery Case: MES Officers Nabbed in Madhya Pradesh
In another anti-corruption drive, the CBI arrested three Military Engineer Services (MES) officers and a middleman in Madhya Pradesh for taking a Rs 80,000 bribe. The arrests happened recently, as per a CBI update on Friday.
The officials caught include Nitesh Kumar Singh, Garrison Engineer at MES Sagar; Rakesh Sahu, Assistant Garrison Engineer at MES Deepak; Deepak, a Junior Engineer at MES; and middleman Rajesh Mishra.
The case stemmed from a complaint by Ajay Kumar, an employee of Shree Balaji Associates. He alleged that these public servants demanded Rs 1 lakh as a bribe to approve a Rs 26.58 lakh contract for repair and maintenance work.
CBI filed an FIR on September 11 under Sections 7 and 7A of the Prevention of Corruption Act for demanding undue advantage, plus Section 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for criminal conspiracy. This raid shows CBI’s zero-tolerance approach to bribery in government projects, ensuring fair play for honest contractors.
