The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has opened a criminal case after the mysterious death of Aqil Akhtar, the son of former Punjab Director General of Police Mohammad Mustafa and his wife Razia Sultana. The incident happened in Panchkula, Haryana, on 16 October, and the CBI filed its first information report (FIR) just a week ago.

The FIR names four people, including Aqil’s wife and sister, under charges of murder and criminal conspiracy. The family says Aqil died from a drug overdose, but a neighbour’s allegation of foul play turned the matter into a murder case. The complaint, made by Shamshuddin Chaudhary from Malerkotla in Punjab, first got Haryana police involved and was later transferred to the CBI after the state government requested the move.

A key part of the complaint is a 16‑minute video Aqil posted on 27 August. In the clip, he speaks of tension in his household, fear for his safety and claims that his mother and sister plotted to kill him or frame him. He says he was forced into a rehabilitation centre, had his business income stopped, and that the family took everything from him.

According to the CBI, the FIR was lodged under Sections 103(1) and 61 of the Indian Penal Code, which cover murder and conspiracy. A spokesperson for the agency said a specialised team has taken up the investigation. Digital and forensic evidence is being collected and the authorities will question all persons named in the FIR.

The CBI aims to examine the alleged family disputes that led to Aqil’s death. The ongoing investigation focuses on whether the circumstances around his death were accidental, intentional or related to internal family conflict. As the case develops, the public will watch closely to see if the former police chief’s family can be cleared of any wrongdoing.
