Bhubaneswar, Oct 22 – Odisha’s chief minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to step in and investigate a huge corruption scandal in the state’s police Sub‑Inspector (SI) recruitment test. The CM’s office said that serious irregularities had come to light in the exam that awards police jobs worth many crores of rupees.
The state police Crime Branch–CID first opened the case, and early findings raised alarm bells. The investigators believe the scheme may stretch beyond Odisha, with links to Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. Experts warn that a cross‑state criminal network could be pulling the strings behind the scam.
“Because of these alarming developments, I have decided to hand the investigation to the CBI,” CM Majhi said. “The CBI will uncover every detail, expose all wrongdoers, and make sure they face tough punishment.”
Odisha’s government also plans to set up a permanent commission to manage police and other uniformed service recruitment. The commission would bring fresh transparency and accountability to future hiring processes.
So far, Odisha police have taken action against 123 people suspected of involvement in the SI recruitment scam. On October 17, officers detained four key suspects: Muna Mohanty, Srikatna Moharana (known as Rinku), T. Abhimanyu Dora, and Priyadarsini Samal.
Investigators say Muna Mohanty ran a crime syndicate that leaked exam papers. He acted under the direction of Sankar Prusty, the director of Panchsoft Technologies Pvt Ltd in Patia, Bhubaneswar. Prusty allegedly engineered the whole wrongdoing, using his corporate cover to influence the recruitment process.
The scam first surfaced after police in Berhampur, Andhra Pradesh, interrupted three buses on September 29 that were carrying 114 candidates and their agents. Those buses were in the night shift, and their mysterious entry raised suspicions. The intercepted transport team is now part of the larger probe.
Sankar Prusty is still on the run. He was in New Delhi at the time the 114 candidates were seized, so authorities are racing to catch him. Once arrested, Prusty and the others will face a long trial and likely heavy penalties for their role in the multi‑crore scheme.
The CBI’s involvement marks a decisive step toward clean, fair police recruitment in Odisha. It also signals that the state will no longer tolerate corruption in military‑grade hiring. The investigation remains under close watch, with many eyes on how the CBI will expose the full extent of the scandal and hold those responsible to account.
