In Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand, thousands of ex‑service men and women gathered on October 11 for the Devbhoomi Mega Veterans Rally. The event, held at Jaswant Singh Ground in Garhi Cantt, drew over 5,000 veterans and created a lively atmosphere of national pride and solidarity.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan opened the rally with a powerful message. He urged veterans to use social media to share positive stories about the armed forces, warning against posts that could harm the image of the military. “We need strategic thinking,” he said. “If veterans help shape a constructive narrative, they help protect our country.”
The CDS also highlighted how the treatment of veterans directly impacts the future generation of soldiers. “The quality of the next army depends on how we treat our veterans today,” he emphasized. He recalled launching the Veteran Cell in 2013—now known as the Directorate of Indian Army Veterans (DIAV)—to improve veteran support.
Citing Uttarakhand’s blend of spirituality and military tradition, General Chauhan praised the region’s unique character, calling it “Devbhoomi,” a land where faith and courage meet. He announced a new economic program modeled after successful initiatives in border states such as Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Ladakh. The plan will source dairy and animal‑husbandry products, and later fresh rations, from local cooperatives through negotiated contracts, aiming to boost the local economy.
During a recent visit to Harshil, veterans requested help relocating to ancestral homes—an issue the government is now considering. In healthcare, the CDS highlighted existing ECHS polyclinics in Pauri, Raiwala, and Vikasnagar and confirmed approval for three new clinics. Proposals to upgrade facilities in Clement Town and Champawat are under review by the Ministry of Defence.
General Chauhan announced the upcoming establishment of an Integrated Veterans Wellness and Seva Kendra at De Bharat Military Station. The centre will be tech‑enabled and focused on veteran welfare, with the expectation of timely completion by Uttarakhand Sub‑Area Headquarters.
The rally also featured a job fair hosted by 21 companies, stalls promoting banking and government schemes, and free medical camps for veterans and their families. Speeches were followed by personal interactions with Governor Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh (Rtd) and the CDS, reaffirming both central and state governments’ commitment to veteran support.
The event concluded with thanks from the veterans and a pledge that “our service will never be forgotten.” The Devbhoomi Mega Veterans Rally showcased strong community spirit, concrete plans for veteran welfare, and a renewed focus on India’s armed forces.
