Madhya Pradesh’s Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced on Thursday that the state will hold Govardhan Puja on October 21. The festival will follow local customs and will be celebrated across the state.
The ceremony will take place at Ravindra Bhavan in Bhopal. CM Yadav said the main program will feature Govardhan Puja rituals, a circular walk called Parikrama, and a special food offering known as Annakoot Bhog. Traditional dances from cattle‑herding communities—Bareli and Thatya—will entertain visitors.
During the day, stalls will showcase organic produce, dairy items, and crafts made from cow dung. Booths will also explain government schemes for animal husbandry, agriculture, and cooperatives.
CM Yadav highlighted the importance of cattle rearing, calling people who raise cows “true Gopals” and noting that every cattle‑rearing home is a “Gokul.” He said the state government is committed to protecting cows and promoting dairy farming. The government’s goal is to double dairy farmers’ income by boosting milk output.
Madhya Pradesh already supplies about nine per cent of India’s milk, and the state hopes to lift its share to 20 per cent. To reach that target, the government runs the “Dugdh Samriddhi Sampark” campaign, where veterinarians visit villages to teach farmers advanced dairy techniques, livestock health, and nutrition.
Today, 2,900 cowsheds operate statewide, housing roughly 425,000 cattle. Under the Mukhyamantri Gau Seva Yojana, 2,203 rural cowsheds house 211,000 cattle.
The Govardhan Puja event promises a mix of tradition, celebration, and practical support for the state’s thriving dairy sector.
