India’s central government has approved the appointment of 24 new judges to the Allahabad High Court, acting on recommendations from the Supreme Court Collegium. This move strengthens the judiciary in Uttar Pradesh’s key high court, which handles a massive caseload.

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice issued the official notification on Friday, September 26. It names the appointees, including advocates like Vivek Saran, Vivek Kumar Singh, Garima Prashad, Sudhanshu Chauhan, and others, as well as judicial officers such as Dr. Ajay Kumar-II, Chawan Prakash, and Divesh Chandra Samant. The full list also features Tarun Saxena, Rajeev Bharti, Padam Narain Mishra, Lakshmi Kant Shukla, Jai Prakash Tiwari, Devendra Singh-I, Sanjiv Kumar, Vani Ranjan Agrawal, Achal Sachdev, and Babita Rani. These judges will take office once they assume their roles.

The decision stems from a September 1 meeting of the Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai. The group endorsed elevating several experienced advocates and judicial officers to the bench, aiming to address the high court’s need for more judges amid rising cases.

However, two recommended names—advocates Adnan Ahmad and Jai Krishna Upadhyay—still await final clearance from the government. Judicial appointments in India follow Article 217 of the Constitution, ensuring a balanced process between the judiciary and executive.

This batch of Allahabad High Court appointments highlights ongoing efforts to bolster India’s court system, where vacancies often delay justice for millions.
