Three teams sent by the Union government will start checking the moisture of freshly harvested paddy in Tamil Nadu this Saturday, the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) announced. The move comes after the state requested permission to lift the allowed moisture limit for paddy from 17 % to 22 % because the northeast monsoon has left crops unusually damp in the delta and northern districts.
The inspections will begin on Saturday, the first team heading to Chengalpattu. They will then cover Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram on Sunday. The second team will judge paddy in Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai on Saturday, move to Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam on Monday, and finish up in Cuddalore on Tuesday. The third team will inspect crops in Tiruchi and Pudukottai on Saturday, then check Madurai and Theni on Monday.
These visits aim to confirm the actual moisture levels of the harvested paddy and decide if the procurement rules can be relaxed without hurting grain quality or storage stability. The teams will report their findings to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, which will approve or deny Tamil Nadu’s request.
Paddy procurement for the 2025‑26 Kuruvai season began on September 1 across 1,839 direct procurement centres. Despite the wet weather, the TNCSC and district officials say the operations run smoothly, with inspections key to helping farmers coping with the early monsoon rains. The teams’ reports will shape the pace and price of the ongoing drive—a vital lifeline for farmers in the delta and northern parts of the state.
