In the hills of Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, a heartwarming rescue unfolded amid the chaos of heavy rains and landslides. A woman stuck under the rubble of her home in Nanda Nagar got a second chance at life when local residents pulled her out safely. This miracle happened late Thursday night, as flash floods battered the region for over two days.
Rescue teams didn’t stop there. Another person, trapped for almost 16 hours in the debris, also made it out alive. Thanks to quick action from police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and district officials, both survivors received on-the-spot first aid before heading to safety.
The heavy rainfall and cloudburst in Chamoli have wreaked havoc. Early reports show more than 30 houses in four villages—Kuntari Lagafali, Senti Lagafali, Dhurma, and Fali Lagafali—either collapsed or suffered major damage. This area, about 260 km from Dehradun and 50 km from Gopeshwar, already battles land subsidence, and the latest downpour made things worse.
Tragically, the disaster has left 14 people feared trapped under debris, with 20 others injured. Search and rescue operations continue non-stop, with teams working around the clock to find survivors.
It all started on September 18 around 2 a.m., when a massive cloudburst hit Binsar hill, sparking deadly floods and landslides. Villages like Kuntari Lagafali and Dhurma bore the brunt. At least 10 people remain missing, including a family of four from Kuntari Lagafali: Kunwar Singh (42), his wife Kanta Devi (38), and their young sons Vikas and Vishal (both 10). Other missing locals include Deveshwari Devi (65), Bhaga Devi (65), Jagdamba Prasad (70), and Narendra Singh (40). From Dhurma, Guman Singh (75) and Mamta Devi (38) are still unaccounted for.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami shared his worry on social media, saying he’s keeping a close eye on the Uttarakhand landslide and flood situation. “Local teams from administration, SDRF, and police rushed to the scene right away for relief and rescues,” he posted. “I pray for everyone’s safety.”
To speed things up, authorities have brought in JCB machines and extra gear to clear the rubble and push forward the rescue efforts in this rain-hit Chamoli area. As the situation unfolds, hope lingers for more good news from these affected villages.
