Chennai is bracing for heavier rains as the northeast monsoon ramps up, threatening floods across the city. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered every department to strengthen preventive and relief plans to keep residents safe.
Police Commissioner M. Arun has taken swift action. He has mobilised 12 rescue teams, each led by a Deputy Commissioner, to patrol the city’s most vulnerable spots. The squads blend trained swimmers, members of the National and State Disaster Response Forces, and local volunteers who know the streets inside out. They’re placed so they can rush to any waterlogged road or blocked street right away.
In addition to the teams, Chennai Police has set up 39 dedicated control rooms to handle distress calls and coordinate help. Twenty‑three of these “mini” rooms sit in South Chennai, the area most at risk of being swept by rising waters. Residents can reach police help instantly by dialing the emergency number 100. “We’ll be at the scene fast,” said Additional Commissioner Dr. Kannan. “We’re fully equipped for rain‑related emergencies.”
Police officials confirm that the city’s response is a joint effort. The Greater Chennai Corporation, Fire and Rescue Services, and disaster‑management agencies are working around the clock. “We have all the manpower, gear, and vehicles ready,” a senior officer said, adding that police are prepared for the heavy monsoon.
Forecasts predict even more rain over the next 48 hours. Authorities urge people to steer clear of water‑logged areas and heed official advisories closely. Emergency teams stay on 24‑hour duty, ready to protect lives and property as Chennai faces the coming storm.
