In a big win for security forces in Chhattisgarh, police and CRPF teams arrested two suspected Maoist militia members during a routine patrol in the rugged Polampalli area of Bijapur district. The joint operation involved officers from Pamed Police Station and the 228 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force, who acted on tips about Jan Militia activity in the region.
As the team moved through the thick forest, the two men spotted them and tried to run. But the forces quickly closed in and nabbed them. Interrogations revealed their identities: Vanjam Hunga, 35, and Sodhi Nande, 33, both from the local Muria tribal community in Polampalli village. Officials say they worked as active members of the Jan Militia, a local arm of the banned CPI (Maoist) group under the Polampalli Revolutionary People’s Committee.
The arrests didn’t stop there. The suspects spilled details that helped forces recover six Bharmar guns—traditional homemade rifles—hidden in the nearby Padalu forest. Investigators believe these weapons were stashed away to arm Maoist fighters in the area, part of ongoing efforts to build their strength.
A senior CRPF officer called the find a game-changer. “Seizing these weapons hits hard at Maoist supply lines and stops them from gearing up for attacks,” he said. “It also uncovers more about how locals support these networks.”
Police have charged the men under the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. They appeared in court and now face judicial custody at Pamed Police Station. This bust fits into a larger push across Chhattisgarh to root out Left-Wing Extremism, with forces stepping up searches in Maoist hotspots. The government aims to wipe out the threat nationwide by 2026.
Authorities stress they’re keeping the heat on insurgents while protecting and gaining trust from local communities. Probes continue to track where the guns came from and who they were meant for, as anti-Maoist operations ramp up in southern Chhattisgarh.
