In a touching highlight at the Urban Innovation and Infrastructure Summit in Vadodara, young students with disabilities from Urmi School stole the show on Saturday. These confident kids welcomed top dignitaries on stage with their amazing talents, warming hearts across the room.
One standout moment came from Gauri Shardul, a Class 10 student who’s visually impaired. She gifted a hand-drawn sketch of the chief guest, framed beautifully, and wowed everyone with her poise. When she asked to speak, organizers quickly handed her a microphone.
Speaking to the packed crowd, Gauri thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for game-changing reforms under the Accessible India Campaign. She highlighted special exam facilities, scribes for support, accessible learning materials, and computer-based tests that make education fairer for students like her.
“These reforms empower us,” Gauri said simply, her words hitting home.
But she didn’t stop there. Gauri called for bigger steps to build inclusive cities, pushing for better public infrastructure. “Our transport system needs to be more inclusive with low-floor buses, barrier-free Metro stations, safe cycle tracks, and tactile paving for the visually impaired. We also need benches and universally designed public toilets that everyone can use,” she urged, earning thunderous applause.
Her bold speech showed the dreams of India’s younger generation for a modern, welcoming society. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel shared his admiration on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “I’m sharing Gauri’s words with you. Definitely listen to them. Presenting a stream of thoughts amidst so many people on the stage is truly commendable. Seeing such a new generation brings a feeling of great joy. With such capable children, we will certainly realise the dream of a developed India – a developed Gujarat.”
The summit in Vadodara brings together innovators, policymakers, and community leaders to spotlight sustainable urban development and inclusive infrastructure solutions. Moments like Gauri’s remind us why events like this matter for a brighter, more accessible future.
