India’s Chief Justice Bhushan Ramakrishna Gavai and his family joined Gandhi Jayanti celebrations in Mauritius on Thursday. They laid flowers at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, to honor his 156th birth anniversary.
The event took place at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, a collaboration between India and Mauritius that spreads Indian culture far and wide. CJI Gavai is there on a three-day official trip.
Local leaders showed up too. Kaviraj Sharma Sukon, the Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, and Mahend Gungapersad, the Minister of Education and Human Resources, attended alongside junior ministers, members of parliament, and top officials.
Back in India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his respects to Gandhi at Raj Ghat in New Delhi. Union Minister Manohar Lal joined him for the floral tribute.
Earlier that day, Modi shared a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter). He praised Gandhi’s courage, simplicity, and focus on service and compassion. “Gandhi Jayanti lets us celebrate the amazing life of Bapu, who changed history with non-violence and truth,” Modi wrote. He added that India will keep following Gandhi’s path toward building a developed nation, or Viksit Bharat.
Gandhi Jayanti falls on October 2, Gandhi’s birthday, and marks a key moment each year in India. People across the country visit places like Raj Ghat, join cultural events, and run campaigns to spread his ideals of peace and equality.
Globally, the day shines as the International Day of Non-Violence. The United Nations declared it in 2007, with support from more than 140 countries. At UN headquarters, the Secretary-General gives speeches, and events link Gandhi’s philosophy to today’s world challenges, like ongoing conflicts. These gatherings stress that truth and non-violence beat any weapon.
Mahatma Gandhi, born on October 2, 1869, led India’s fight for freedom from British rule. He championed Satyagraha, or non-violent resistance, and inspired massive movements. In 1930, he guided the Dandi March, where thousands marched to the sea to protest the salt tax. Then, in 1942, he sparked the Quit India Movement, demanding an end to colonial control. His ideas still guide people worldwide in pursuing justice without violence.
