Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced that the state’s Chief Minister has given officials a tight deadline: fix all Bengaluru roads by October 31. To speed up the work on the city’s notorious pothole crisis, the government is adding Rs 750 crore in funding.
Shivakumar shared these updates after a key meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence in Bengaluru on Saturday. The discussion focused on improving roads and easing traffic in the tech hub. As the Minister for Urban Development, Shivakumar stressed the need for quick action.
“We met with Greater Bengaluru Authority officials to tackle the pothole problem head-on,” Shivakumar said. “Thanks to our teams, police, and even the public pitching in, we’ve spotted around 10,000 potholes across the city. I’ve made it clear: if these aren’t repaired on time, there will be strict consequences.”
He urged police to map out potholes and respond fast when residents report them. “The Chief Minister wants a fresh plan ready once the monsoon wraps up,” Shivakumar added, noting how heavy rains have worsened road conditions everywhere. “Potholes plague cities nationwide, but Bengaluru grabs headlines because our media has real freedom here—unlike some places where it’s tightly controlled.”
Shivakumar also took a moment to reaffirm his roots in Ramanagara district, his hometown. At a Friday event marking the birth anniversary of former leader Devaraj Urs, he declared, “I was born on this soil, I’ll live here, and I’ll die here. I don’t need anything from this district—it’s my home. My focus is empowering the people who live here.”
This push comes amid growing frustration over Bengaluru’s bumpy roads, especially after recent downpours that have turned streets into obstacle courses. The extra funding and deadline aim to deliver smoother drives for the city’s millions of commuters.
