Chennai’s public transport is about to get a major upgrade. On Monday, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will chair the second meeting of the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) at the State Secretariat. There, he’ll approve a 25-year Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the Chennai Metropolitan Area and launch India’s first integrated multi-modal transport app.
The star of the show is the new “Chennai Ondru” mobile app. It works smoothly on both iOS and Android devices, pulling together all the key public transport options in one place: buses, suburban electric trains, metro rail, taxis, and autorickshaws.
Imagine buying a single ticket via QR code that lets you hop between these modes without hassle. That’s the app’s big draw—a common QR-based ticketing system. You can pay easily with UPI or your card, skipping those long lines at counters.
Plus, the app delivers real-time updates on bus and train locations, so you can plan your trip smarter and avoid waiting around. Officials say this will cut down wait times and make getting around Chennai much more convenient.
To reach more people, the Chennai Ondru app supports multiple languages: English, Tamil, Telugu, and Kannada. It offers a single digital pass for all public transport, giving commuters flexibility like never before.
This launch could transform how people move in Chennai, pushing for sustainable, tech-savvy urban transport. The Tamil Nadu government aims to encourage more public transport use, easing traffic congestion and cutting down on vehicle emissions.
By blending planning, payments, and live tracking into one platform, Chennai is paving the way as a national leader in smart mobility solutions. It’s a step toward putting the city on the global stage for innovative transport.
