Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath shared his deep sorrow on Sunday over the tragic stampede at a public rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, where 38 people lost their lives. The incident happened during an event for Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader and actor Vijay, drawing massive crowds that turned deadly.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Yogi Adityanath wrote: “Deeply anguished to hear about the tragic accident in Karur, Tamil Nadu. This saddening incident has snatched away precious lives. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. May Prabhu Shri Ram give them strength and peace to the departed souls. Prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. Om Shanti!”
The stampede struck on Saturday as fans eagerly waited for Vijay. Eyewitnesses described chaos that no one could fully control, highlighting the dangers of overcrowded rallies in Tamil Nadu.
Nanda Kumar, who was at the scene, told that the crowd swelled far beyond expectations. “We were there ourselves. Nothing could be done to control the crowd,” he said. Vijay was set to arrive at 11 a.m., but his delay left people waiting in the heat—many with hungry kids in tow. “It’s hard to say who’s at fault. People came excited to see a star, but this is deeply distressing,” Kumar added. He urged better planning for such events: “Even with safety measures, what happens when 10 or 15 times more people show up? The Tamil Nadu government must support the affected families.”
Another witness, Suriya, painted a grim picture of the rescue efforts. “Ambulances couldn’t get in. There wasn’t enough space for people to stand. It took a very long time to bring people out,” he shared with .
Zakir, a relative of one victim, pointed to the timing issues near Thirukoilure, where the crowd included many young people and women. “Vijay was supposed to arrive at 9 a.m., but he didn’t. That caused the huge rush,” he said. Heartbroken, Zakir warned against bringing women and children to these high-energy political rallies: “It’s very difficult and emotionally painful to witness.”
As investigations continue into the Karur stampede causes, calls grow for stricter crowd management at Vijay’s TVK events and similar gatherings across India to prevent future tragedies.
