India’s Coast Guard added two new fast patrol vessels to its fleet on Friday, boosting the country’s coastal security. Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) launched the ICGS Ajit and ICGS Aparajit, the seventh and eighth ships of an eight‑vessel indigenously built series for the ICG. The move marks a significant step in India’s growing own ship‑building industry and improves patrol, anti‑smuggling, anti‑piracy and search‑and‑rescue operations around the nation’s islands and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
Both ships are 52 metres long and weigh about 320 tonnes. They feature Controllable Pitch Propellers—India’s first in this class—giving them better manoeuvrability and fuel efficiency. Designed and built entirely by GSL, the vessels will patrol the coast, protect fisheries, guard the EEZ and help with rescue missions when needed.
The launch ceremony was attended by Goa Shipyard officials, senior Coast Guard officers and Dr Mayank Sharma, the Defence Financial Advisor. He praised the project for strengthening domestic industry, creating jobs and supporting the MSME ecosystem. Commander Bhisham Sharma of the ICG West Region also spoke about the new vessels’ role in improving maritime safety.
With the addition of Ajit and Aparajit, the ICG expands its modern, high‑speed fleet, ensuring better readiness along India’s extensive coastline. The launch further cements GSL’s reputation as a key builder of next‑generation indigenous defence ships, helping India protect its maritime interests more effectively.
