Coimbatore is turning greener, one rooftop and road at a time! The Coimbatore Corporation in Tamil Nadu is all set to create a stunning rooftop garden on its main Town Hall office. This exciting project aims to boost the city’s green cover and fight urban heat islands—those hot spots caused by too much concrete and buildings.
Think of it as a blueprint for other city structures to grow more trees and plants on top. As part of their big push, the corporation has already planted 46,519 saplings out of a whopping one lakh target for this year. They’re ramping up efforts to hit the rest before the financial year ends, focusing on heat-prone areas like the north zone, where temperatures soar higher than in the city center.
To get residents involved in this green revolution, the corporation is hosting a rooftop gardening expo next week. It’ll be a hands-on event, showing folks how to pick the best plants for home terraces, care for them, and use the right manure. They’ll even share tips on where to buy materials and accessories, inspiring families to add more greenery to Coimbatore.
The beautification drive doesn’t stop there. Medians on major roads like Pollachi Road are blooming with colorful flowering plants. Flyover medians are getting partial makeovers, with the full rollout planned in the next few weeks. Along the Noyyal River bunds, 23,145 palm saplings are thriving, adding to over 70,000 saplings planted citywide through various drives.
In a smart eco-move, they’ve also built a 45-acre Miyawaki forest on reclaimed land at the Vellalore dumpyard. This dense, fast-growing forest uses treated wastewater for maintenance, proving it’s a sustainable way to revive urban spaces.
These steps are helping Coimbatore build a stronger natural ecosystem, making the city more livable and sparking community action for environmental change.
