Police in Betul district, Madhya Pradesh, have arrested at least five people after a small bike clash turned into a larger communal row. The incident began when the district’s Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief, Shishupal Yadav, was reportedly hit by a bike driven by a Muslim youth in a market near Multai, a coal‑mining town close to Chhindwara.
What started as a single bike collision quickly escalated. Participants from both sides got into a physical fight, with people from the two communities chasing each other along the road. Neighbours shouted and threw punches until the police rushed in. Officers separated the groups, and the scene calmed down.
Following the incident, a group of locals marched to the Multai police station to demand strict punishment for those who allegedly tried to harm Shishupal Yadav. Police imposed Section 144 in Multai, set up a strong patrol and even marched the streets on Friday. Additional forces were flown in from Chhindwara and Pandhurna districts to keep the peace.
Betul Superintendent of Police, Veerendra Jain, has suspended two sub‑inspectors for failing to prevent the escalation.
BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma of the Huzur Assembly seat in Bhopal called the event “unfortunate.” He said that unnamed Muslim youths had deliberately tried to hurt the RSS leader. “The state government will take stern action,” Sharma told . “I will meet Muslim leaders and urge them to stop their youths from creating violence.”
The area has faced other recent tragedies. Betul, together with Chhindwara, suffered the loss of 23 children who died after consuming the cough syrup brand Coldrif. Of those children, three to four were from Betul, the rest were from Chhindwara.
The police remain on high alert. They are still searching for more people involved in the dispute while working to prevent further tensions between the communities.
