Congress Leaders Slam Kerala Police for Treating KSU Students Like Criminals
In a heated political row in Kerala, top Congress leaders are furious over how police handled three KSU student leaders. The students, arrested after a clash with SFI activists, showed up in court with their faces covered in black cloth and hands cuffed. This sparked outrage, with leaders calling it a shocking abuse of power by the Pinarayi Vijayan-led government.
KPCC President Sunny Joseph didn’t hold back. He labeled the treatment a "gross violation of human rights" and accused the Vadakkanchery police of acting like CPI(M) foot soldiers. "They paraded these KSU activists like terrorists based on a fake SFI complaint," Joseph said. He demanded answers from the Home Department: "What treason did these youngsters commit to deserve this?" Joseph warned the officers that Congress would make them answer for it one day, adding, "Enjoy your power now, but it won’t last forever."
The criticism didn’t stop there. AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal urged the Kerala State Human Rights Commission to step in on its own. "This is a clear attack on constitutional rights," he said. "Treating KSU students like sedition suspects shows police stations in Kerala are becoming concentration camps." Venugopal pointed fingers at Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for staying silent, saying the incident has even damaged the mental health of young students. "This isn’t the end— the CM shouldn’t forget that."
KPCC Working President A.P. Anil Kumar echoed the anger, claiming the police have "lost their balance." He called the case against the KSU students bogus, noting they were the ones beaten by SFI. "This proves the Home Department is crumbling," Kumar said. He called for strict action against the officers who "shattered the students’ morale."
Senior Congress legislator Ramesh Chennithala joined the chorus, condemning the police for treating the youths like "anti-nationals or hardened criminals." He accused the Vadakkanchery police of being "CPI(M)’s hired goons" and promised payback. "Congress knows how to stop this. When the government changes, we’ll act without mercy. Don’t think you can retire comfortably with your pensions," he warned.
This uproar highlights the growing tensions around student politics in Kerala. The opposition claims the police are bending to political pressure from the ruling CPI(M), turning routine clashes into major human rights issues. As the debate heats up, all eyes are on how the Vijayan government responds to these serious allegations.
