In Chandigarh, veteran Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, sharply criticized Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday. Bajwa accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of betraying women’s trust by repeatedly failing to deliver the promised monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000, a key pledge that helped AAP win the 2022 Assembly elections.
“Mann promised direct support to thousands of women, but three years later those promises are buried in excuses,” Bajwa said in a statement. “Every time women remind the Chief Minister of his commitment, he dodges the issue with new pretexts.”
During the Tarn Taran bye‑election, women again demanded answers from Mann, who offered another empty assurance that the scheme would launch in the 2026‑27 Budget session. Prior to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Mann increased the projected amount to Rs 1,100 and assured voters the scheme would start immediately after the elections. Yet the 2025‑26 state budget made no mention of the program.
Bajwa called Mann’s handling of the scheme a “classic case of political betrayal.” He urged the Chief Minister to not only launch the assistance in 2026‑27 but also to pay the arrears owed to women since 2022, when the pledge was first made.
“Repeated deferrals expose the hollow governance of the AAP government,” the Congress leader said. “The women of Punjab will not forgive a government that used their empowerment as a campaign slogan and then conveniently forgot them after winning power.”
