Congress leaders in India have made some key moves in Tripura, focusing on party organization and calling for action on a major bank scam.
On Monday, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge set up a new 25-member Political Affairs Committee (PAC) for the Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC). This group will help shape the party’s direction in the state. All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary K.C. Venugopal announced the details, naming Saptagiri Sankar Ulaka as the PAC chairman. Ulaka serves as the party’s central observer for Tripura.
The committee includes TPCC President Asish Kumar Saha and three sitting MLAs: Sudip Roy Barman, Birajit Sinha, and Gopal Chandra Roy. Other members bring experience from politics and beyond. They feature former Chief Minister Samir Ranjan Barman; ex-MLAs Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl, Ashok Debbarma, Jyotirmoy Nath, and Manindra Reang; veteran lawyer Pijush Kanti Biswas; and two women leaders, Khumtia Tripura (Debbarma) and Sangita Das.
Leaders of all Congress frontal organizations in Tripura join automatically as members.
In a separate push, the TPCC demanded a fair investigation into a shocking Rs 16.38 crore bank fraud at the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC). Police say scammers used cloned cheques to pull off the theft from the AMC’s account. The Tripura government responded by forming a four-member Special Investigating Team (SIT), led by an Additional Superintendent of Police. So far, they’ve arrested one bank cashier involved.
Speaking to reporters, TPCC chief Asish Kumar Saha pressed Chief Minister Manik Saha to oversee an impartial probe. “We want a thorough and unbiased look into this fraud,” Saha said. He pointed out that the bank cleared the cheques after what they called proper signature checks. The stolen funds went to 78 different accounts before ending up in just two—owned by people in Delhi and Nagpur. This AMC bank fraud case has raised big questions about security in Tripura’s financial systems.
