Congress leader Supriya Shrinate fired sharp criticism at Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday for comparing Indian cricketers to soldiers after their big win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup final. She called fans who celebrated the victory “traitors” and urged them to demand a boycott of matches against Pakistan instead.
In a video shared on social media, Shrinate slammed Modi for linking the cricket triumph to Operation Sindoor, India’s military strike against terror targets. She labeled the players “money-grabbing cricketers” and questioned how the PM could equate border heroes—who risk their lives—with sports stars chasing cash.
“PM Narendra Modi has gone too far by comparing soldiers who sacrifice everything on the border with these money-grabbing cricketers,” Shrinate wrote on X, formerly Twitter. She expressed disbelief at Modi’s post, joking at first that it might come from a fake account rather than his verified one.
Shrinate pointed to the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, where 26 people lost their lives. She accused celebrators of forgetting those victims and failing to push for skipping the India-Pakistan cricket showdown. “Anyone who watched the match, cheered the win, or danced in joy—do they really love their country? What about the families who lost loved ones?” she asked.
If people were true patriots, Shrinate argued, they would refuse to play cricket with Pakistan, a nation she called a hub for terrorists. She also blamed Modi for greenlighting the game, claiming it funnels money straight to Pakistan’s cricket board—and ultimately to fund attacks on India.
Shrinate highlighted the irony by recalling Modi’s tough stance after the Pahalgam attack. He suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and declared, “Blood and water can’t flow together.” But with cricket, she said, Modi let “blood and cricket flow at the same time.”
Meanwhile, Modi’s praise for Team India’s Asia Cup victory drew massive online cheers. His X post—”Operation Sindoor on the games field. Outcome is the same—India wins! Congrats to our cricketers”—racked up over 107,000 retweets and 25 million impressions, showing strong public backing.
Operation Sindoor happened in May as India’s armed forces launched precise cross-border raids on terror launchpads and infrastructure in Pakistan, hitting back hard after the Pahalgam killings. The contrast between political backlash and fan excitement underscores the heated debate around India-Pakistan cricket matches and national security.
