The state of Madhya Prachand has been rocked by the deaths of 14 children in the town of Chhindwara after they drank a cough syrup. The tragedy has prompted lawmakers to demand real action.
The party that runs the state, the Indian National Congress, has its president, Jitu Patwari, filing a formal letter with the Chief Minister, Mohan Yadav. Patwari says the Health Minister, Rajendra Shukla, must be removed immediately. “If you want it to look like you are taking this seriously,” Patwari told , the news agency, “dismiss the Health Minister right now.” He also wants the government to give each affected family a one‑crore rupee hand‑out to cover the loss.
Opposition leader Umang Singhar echoed the call for accountability. He said the government should set up a medical‑product investigation and hold the drug maker responsible. “You banned the company, but you are looking at the doctor,” Singhar said. He questioned why the state Drug Controller, who should sign off on medicines, hasn’t been held accountable. “The Chief Minister must act before this crisis turns into a graveyard,” he warned.
Singhar wants the government to offer an ex‑gratia of ten lakh rupees to every family and a job for any survivors who lost family members. He urged the Chief Minister to summon the Health Minister for a judicial inquiry and to give a clean chit to the cough syrup maker.
Chhindwara officials confirmed that at least 14 children have died, and eight more are in hospitals after consuming the same medicine. The case is causing a national outcry over drug safety and ministerial responsibility.
