In Bhubaneswar, the opposition Congress Party set up two new groups to fight the upcoming Nuapada by‑election on November 11.
A steering committee of ten members will steer the campaign and plan the strategy. The team includes MP Saptagiri Ulaka, Debasish Patnaik (Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee vice‑president), Siddharth Swarup Dash (OPCC treasurer), and five MLAs: Ashok Das, Sagar Charan Das, K Appalla Swamy, Satyajeet Gomang, Mangu Khilla, Pabitra Saunta and Nilamadhab Hikka.
The party also formed a 22‑person Election Monitoring Committee for the Nuapada polls.
Ghasiram Majhi, the Congress candidate for the seat, said he will file his nomination on October 18. He will do so alongside OPCC president Bhakta Charan Das and other senior leaders. On the same day, Majhi plans a big rally in Nuapada that could draw over 25,000 supporters and workers.
The All India Congress Committee announced on October 7 that Majhi, a tribal leader, would run for the seat. He had previously contested independently in 2024, losing to late BJP king‑maker Rajendra Dholakia by 10,881 votes but still out‑scored the official Congress nominee. Majhi has run there three times, falling short each time.
The Nuapada seat is vacant after the former minister Rajendra Dholakia was found dead on September 8. The ruling BJP has nominated his son, Jay Dholakia, while the main rival BJD has chosen former minister Snehangini Chhuria.
Both parties are gearing up for a fierce campaign as the by‑poll draws nearer.
