Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in New Delhi on Saturday, urging the BJP government to keep up the momentum of its “Aspirational Districts Plan.” He said the previous Congress administration had labeled many districts “backwards,” only to forget to follow through on needed projects. Under Modi’s leadership, the government has turned those districts into “aspirational” ones, focusing on road building, electrification and vaccination coverage.
Modi highlighted the sharp improvement in infrastructure and health. He compared the state of over 100 districts in 2018—when most villages had no roads, many children were not vaccinated, and schools lacked electricity—to the present, where roads connect once-isolated settlements, vaccines reach more children, and every school now has power. “We are building convergence, collaboration, and healthy competition,” Modi said, encouraging each government department to run its own projects and involve every citizen.
The PM also defended the BJP’s agricultural policy, noting that the party has spent more on subsidies than the Congress‑led governments of the past decade. “We have given more than 13 lakh crore rupees in fertilizer subsidies in the last ten years, while the Congress spent far less,” he added. Modi stressed that farmers and district heads need to develop local action plans for “PM Dhan Dhaanya Krishi Yojana,” an agricultural scheme with a 35,440‑crore‑rupee outlay. The plan is flexible and will be adapted to each district’s soil and climate.
In addition to the Dhan Dhaanya programme, Modi announced the “Mission for Aatmanirbharta in Pulses,” backed by an 11,440‑crore‑rupee budget. This initiative seeks to boost pulse production, widen cultivation areas and strengthen the entire value chain—from procurement to storage and processing—aiming to curb losses and increase farmer income.
“Once farming improves in a village, the whole village economy changes,” Modi told the audience. He also warned against neglecting nutrition, especially protein, for children in India’s vegetarian‑based diets.
The Prime Minister closed his address by noting that he had spent his earlier morning talking with farmers, fishermen and women working in agriculture. “I heard firsthand the challenges they face,” he said, underscoring his administration’s commitment to ground‑level engagement.
