Bengaluru, Oct 18 – Opposition Leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy has slammed the local authorities after they denied permission for a Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) foot march in Chittapur and removed flags and banners that had been erected following a fee collection of nearly Rs 6,000.
Narayanaswamy called the move “arbitrary” and accused Minister Priyank Kharge, who represents the Chittapur assembly seat, of misconduct. He said the decision unfairly targets the RSS, an organisation that, he pointed out, is not a political party.
Speaking at the BJP office in Jagannath Bhavan, Bangalore, Minister Kharge defended the action. He explained that the RSS is a public association and noted that a central‑government directive allowed the march to proceed. He urged the opposition to respect the rule of law.
Narayanaswamy replied that the issue is more than a local dispute. He questioned why the minister should be able to block a group that serves the community and challenged him to explain why working in a civic organisation, such as the AICC’s unit for nomadic communities, is illegal. The opposition leader demanded that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge address the allegations.
The Leader of the Opposition also raised concerns about Kharge’s track record on local problems. He cited incidents of violence in Kalaburagi and Bijapur, infrastructure failures like a collapsed school roof in Wadi, unpaid wages for librarians and watermen, and the lack of relief from floods and drought. He accused Kharge of dismissing these issues and focusing instead on the RSS controversy.
“Priyank Kharge is in a ministerial position yet he has failed to perform his duties,” Narayanaswamy said. “He misleads the public and keeps the community’s problems unaddressed.”
The controversy highlights tensions between the BJP and Congress in Karnataka, with the opposition calling for accountability and clear communication on public protests and local governance matters.
