In Bhopal, government officials and the public are still coping with the shocking loss of 12 children who died after taking a cough syrup in Chhindwara district, Madhya Pradesh.

The deaths have triggered an urgent call from Congress MLA PC Sharma for a full investigation. “It isn’t just an accidental death,” Sharma said. “If the authorities had acted right away, we might have stopped more children from dying.” He blasted the state Health Department for delaying the probe and called the situation “suspicious.” He urged the police to file a formal complaint against everyone involved, hinting that the company that makes the syrup and the prescribing doctor should be barred from the market.

The police, led by Superintendent Ajay Pandey, have taken action. Dr. Pradeep Soni, who prescribed the cough syrup for the most affected children, is now in police custody. Investigators have also named Sresan Pharmaceuticals, a firm based in Tamil Nadu, as a prime accused in the case. The police relied on a BMO report to charge the doctor and the company under sections of the Drugs and Cosmetic Act and the Indian Penal Code.

Following the deaths, the Madhya Pradesh government announced a statewide ban on the cough syrup. In the last 30 days, 11 children in Chhindwara alone died of kidney failure that doctors linked to the medicine. The health minister’s delayed response—three days after the first deaths—has fueled anger and accusations that the tragedy could have been avoided sooner.

As the investigation continues, families and officials hope a thorough inquiry will bring answers. They also want accountability, with a blacklist for the manufacturer and legal action against the physician and any other parties responsible. The case remains under close scrutiny, as the state tries to prevent a repeat of the tragedy and restore public trust in child safety.
