The alleged day‑time molestation of two Australian women cricketers in Indore has sparked a wave of outrage across the state and the nation.

The incident happened around 11 a.m. near Khajrana Road, just half a kilometre from the players’ hotel. According to Indore police, a man on a motorcycle – identified as Aqeel Khan – followed the two Australian tourists, tried to touch one of them inappropriately, and fled the scene. Security officers were immediately alerted, the attacker was arrested, and he has been booked and sent to jail.

Police said a video of the assault was captured and that the accused has a history of similar offences. The quick police response has been welcomed by some, but the event has inflamed calls for better safety for visitors and sportspeople.

### Strong condemnation from opposition

The state Congress, led in Madhya Pradesh by Jitu Patwari, blasted the situation. “The country’s cleanest city should not become a scene of filth,” the party said. Patwari called the incident “shameful and reprehensible,” arguing that the ruling BJP government failed to keep law and order in Indore. He urged Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also handles home affairs and oversees Indore, to act swiftly and take strict action against anyone responsible.

### BJP’s response

BJP leaders reacted differently. Indore mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava described the event as “unfortunate” but praised the police for their prompt arrest and investigation. “It is surprising such an incident occurred in a city known for its cleanliness and safety, but the police acted quickly,” he said.

### Why it matters

The incident does more than scare a few tourists; it raises questions about the safety of athletes and international visitors in India. The incident’s timing, occurring in broad daylight and in a city that prides itself on cleanliness, shocked many. With Doha hosting of IPL matches and a growing presence of foreign players on Indian soil, ensuring secure environments has become a public priority.

### Current status

Police have released the accused from custody to jail. Investigations are underway, with authorities monitoring for any further threats. The event has prompted calls from sports bodies and local officials to strengthen security on match days and in tourist hotspots.

The story remains under hot scrutiny, with both political parties and the public demanding accountability and stronger measures to protect visitors and athletes in India’s cities.
