On Saturday, Sukhbir Singh Badal, the leader of the Shiromani Akali Dal, spoke at a SGPC seminar in New Delhi that marked 350 years since the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib.
He urged Sikhs around the world to stand up against a “deep‑rooted conspiracy” that aims to seize control of Sikh religious institutions and leave the Khalsa Panth without direction.
Badal highlighted the celebration of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru who sacrificed his life to protect a faith that was not his own.
He said the Indian nation must follow the Guru’s example of secularism, human rights and civil liberty, values that his party has also championed.
“Our country needs the Guru’s spirit of religious tolerance,” Badal said.
He praised former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for safeguarding peace and harmony for fifteen years.
The former deputy chief minister warned that powerful forces are plotting to control the three key Sikh institutions:
- Akal Takhat Sahib – the shrine of the Guru Granth Sahib
- SGPC – the Sundar Gate of Sikh Gurdwaras
- SAD – the community’s political party
According to Badal, “intentional misinformation” campaigns are designed to eliminate Sikh elected representatives from managing their holy places. The end goal, he said, is to dilute the distinct Khalsa identity and hand the shrines over to non‑Sikh interests.
Badal called on the global Sikh community to recognise, expose and defeat these attempts. He urged vigilance and unity to preserve the integrity of Sikh religious life and to safeguard communal harmony across India.
