A Kolkata court acquitted three men today, clearing them of charges in a 2021 bomb attack on Trinamool Congress MLA and former West Bengal minister Jakir Hossain. The Bankshall Court freed Isha Khan, Abu Samad, and Saidul Islam after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) failed to provide strong evidence linking them to the incident.
The attack happened at Nimtita railway station in Murshidabad district. Hossain and his supporters were heading to catch a train to Kolkata for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s workers’ meeting when attackers threw crude bombs at them. Hossain suffered a serious hand injury and ended up in critical condition. He first got treatment at Jangipur sub-divisional hospital, then moved to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. After several tough days, his health improved, and doctors eventually discharged him.
West Bengal’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) launched the probe right after the assault. But the central government stepped in, and the NIA took over the NIA bomb attack investigation. Agents arrested the three suspects and filed a chargesheet against them.
During Wednesday’s hearing, though, the case fell apart. The NIA couldn’t identify the men as the attackers, and they recovered no explosives from them. Prosecutors even struggled to prove Hossain planned to board the Teesta-Torsa Express that day. The court also questioned how none of Hossain’s 12 security guards got hurt in the chaos.
With no solid proof, the judge acquitted all three men, ending the long-running West Bengal political violence case.
