In Durgapur today, a court turned down the bail requests of four men accused of gang‑raping a second‑year medical student. The judge sent them to judicial custody for five days and set a Test‑Identification parade for all six suspects on October 24.
Four of the six accused had already been brought to the bench on Wednesday afternoon, while the other two were heard on Tuesday. Like the first four, the second pair were denied bail and ordered into custody.
The court also reviewed the victim’s and her classmate’s WhatsApp chats, and the public prosecutor, Bibhas Chatterjee, urged the judge to see that the real culprits face punishment. Chatterjee said the case is clear now and the accused will soon be tried.
Police have added more charges against two of the six suspects, including sections for extortion, wrongful confinement and outraging a woman’s modesty. The original case, filed on October 10, involved a forested area outside a private medical college and hospital in West Burdwan. Five men are accused of attacking the student, but police say only one actually performed the assault. A male friend of the victim was also arrested after inconsistencies were found in his statements.
All six accused will appear again on October 27, after the five‑day custody period ends. The case remains a key focus of the Durgapur police investigation into the shocking gang‑rape incident that has drawn national attention.
