Court reserves order on bail plea of Samir Modi in alleged rape case

A New Delhi court has put off its decision on businessman Samir Modi’s bail request in an alleged rape case. On Tuesday, September 23, the Saket District Court heard arguments from the complainant’s side and reserved its order after both parties spoke up. The ruling could come as soon as September 25.

Delhi Police strongly opposed Modi’s bail, arguing he’s an influential figure who might flee the country. The entire hearing took place behind closed doors, away from public eyes, to protect those involved.

Additional Sessions Judge Vipin Kharb listened to points from the victim’s legal team, led by senior advocate Geeta Luthra, along with Shubham Mahajan and Ravish Thukral. Modi’s defense, headed by senior advocate Ramesh Gupta and including Shailendra Singh and Surya Pratap Singh, fired back against the prosecution’s claims.

This comes after a busy few days for Modi in court. Just the day before, on Monday, a Judicial Magistrate First Class extended his judicial custody until October 6. Police had filed their opposition to the bail on September 20, highlighting the flight risk.

The case kicked off when Delhi Police registered an FIR against Modi on September 10 for the alleged rape. They quickly issued a Look Out Circular to keep tabs on him. Turns out, Modi had flown to London on a return ticket but got detained at the airport and turned over to authorities on September 18.

The next day, September 19, the Saket Court approved a two-day police remand for Modi before shifting him to judicial custody. That hearing was also in-camera, with the judge clearing out media and onlookers to ensure privacy.
