Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in India’s Lok Sabha, didn’t hold back during a recent speech at EIA University of Colombia. He slammed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ideologies, calling cowardice their core trait.
Gandhi pointed to a 2023 statement from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar about China. “China is much more powerful than us—how can we pick a fight?” Jaishankar had said. Gandhi used this to argue that RSS and BJP target the weak but back away from the strong. “This is the heart of their ideology: beat up those who can’t fight back and run from anyone tougher,” he told the crowd.
He went further, referencing a story from Hindutva ideologue Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s book. Savarkar described how he and his friends attacked a Muslim man and felt thrilled about it. “If five people gang up on one person and that makes them happy, that’s pure cowardice,” Gandhi said. “That’s the RSS way—preying on the vulnerable.”
Turning to bigger issues, Gandhi took aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. He called the assault on India’s democracy the nation’s top challenge right now. Gandhi stressed that India shines in fields like engineering and healthcare, making him optimistic about its future. But he warned of deep structural problems that need fixing.
“India thrives on diversity—with 16 or 17 major languages, multiple religions, and countless traditions,” Gandhi explained. “It’s like a big conversation among all these cultures. Democracy gives them the space to coexist and grow.” Without it, he added, tensions could boil over, posing a huge risk to the country.
Gandhi urged protecting this democratic system to let India’s rich mix of ideas and beliefs flourish. His words highlight ongoing debates about RSS ideology, BJP policies, and threats to Indian democracy.
