CP Radhakrishnan has officially stepped into his new role as India’s 15th Vice President. On Friday, September 12, he took the oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. President Droupadi Murmu personally administered the oath to him, marking a big moment in Indian politics.
The ceremony drew top leaders from across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended, along with Union Ministers like Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, JP Nadda, and Nitin Gadkari. Other dignitaries joined in to celebrate the occasion.
Why this date? A senior NDA source shared that September 12 morning was picked because pandits declared it an auspicious time for the swearing-in.
Political bigwigs flew into Delhi for the event. The guest list included Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar, and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
Radhakrishnan, the NDA’s chosen candidate, won the Vice President election on Tuesday. He grabbed 452 votes, beating opposition pick and former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy, who got 300. Before this, Radhakrishnan served as Maharashtra’s Governor. He also handled Jharkhand’s governorship from February 2023 to July 2024, plus extra duties as Telangana Governor and Puducherry Lieutenant Governor from March to July 2024.
A seasoned BJP leader, Radhakrishnan has a strong track record. He won Lok Sabha elections from Coimbatore twice and led as Tamil Nadu BJP State President.
The election saw high participation—767 out of 781 MPs voted, a solid 98.2% turnout. Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody, the returning officer, noted 752 valid votes and 15 invalid ones, setting the majority mark at 377 first-preference votes.
NDA started with support from 427 MPs, but got a boost from 11 YSRCP lawmakers backing Radhakrishnan. He ended up with 14 more votes than expected, fueling talks of some opposition cross-voting. Meanwhile, 13 MPs skipped the vote: seven from BJD, four from BRS, one from SAD, and one independent.
