In a major win for security forces in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, a top CPI Maoist leader named Sujatha, also known as Kalpana, has surrendered to the Telangana Police. This comes as a huge setback for the Maoist movement in the Dandakaranya area, where they’ve long held sway.
Bastar Inspector General of Police P Sundarrai shared the news, calling it a game-changer. Kalpana, a Central Committee member of the banned CPI (Maoist), gave herself up on September 13. She’s worth a whopping Rs 40 lakh reward and faces over 70 criminal cases across Bastar districts. Officials say her surrender highlights the Maoists’ growing crisis of confidence, thanks to tough, non-stop operations by state police and central forces.
Sundarrai pointed out the bigger picture: In 2023 alone, security teams like DRG, STF, COBRA, Bastar Fighters, CRPF, BSF, ITBP, and SSB recovered more than 250 Maoist bodies after intense ambushes. Key figures among them included CPI (Maoist) General Secretary Basavaraju, Central Committee member Gautam, and state-level cadres like Sudhir, Renuka, and Bhaskar Rao.
These joint efforts with intelligence agencies and border security units have hit the Maoists hard. Recent crackdowns have led to massive hauls of weapons and explosives, plus the busting of several hideouts in their strongholds. The pressure has left top Maoist leaders rattled, with no room to regroup or grow.
The IGP welcomed Kalpana’s move, noting she’s in charge of the South Sub-Zone Bureau. He added that over 850 Maoist cadres have surrendered and rejoined mainstream society, all thanks to the government’s supportive rehabilitation policies. “The CPI (Maoist) is losing direction and leadership fast,” Sundarrai said. This surrender could inspire more to follow suit and weaken the group’s grip even further.
