In a recent statement, Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA KK Shailaja welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur but pointed out that it came too late. She believes an earlier trip could have saved lives amid the ongoing ethnic clashes in the state.
“We are very happy that the Prime Minister visited Manipur,” Shailaja told on Saturday. “However, he should have visited a little earlier. Some people’s lives could have been saved if he had come sooner.”
PM Modi’s visit marked his first to Manipur since the violent ethnic conflict erupted in May 2023 between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The clashes have wreaked havoc, hurting Manipur’s economy, breaking social ties, and shaking up its politics.
During the trip, Modi urged the ethnic groups to drop their weapons and join hands for peace. He shared an optimistic note, saying a “new dawn of hope and confidence” is rising in the northeastern state.
Modi also kicked off several big development projects worth over Rs 7,300 crore in Churachandpur. His government is pushing for inclusive growth, and he laid the foundation stone for the Manipur Urban Roads and Drainage Improvement Project, valued at more than Rs 3,600 crore.
He greenlit five National Highway projects costing over Rs 2,500 crore, the Manipur Infotech Development (MIND) project, and working women’s hostels at nine spots across Manipur.
On a separate note, Shailaja downplayed a meeting between Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and CPI(M) leaders as just routine business. “This is a routine meeting. Every two months, we meet here,” she explained. “Central committee members of CPI(M) today discussed issues from the states and the policies we need to adopt next year, based on our last party conference, focusing on political matters. Tomorrow, we’re set to talk about current political developments.”
