In Hyderabad‑based Nizamabad city, police rounded up a notorious fugitive on Sunday after a week‑long hunt that ended when the man was spotted near Sarangapur. The suspect, 24‑year‑old Shaik Riyaz, was on the run after he brutally stabbed and killed a police constable two days earlier.
Police captured Riyaz inside a shed just a block from the Nizamabad Town 6 Police Station. Officers had received a tip that the suspect was hiding there, and a local citizen, Asif, helped spot him. When Riyaz saw the police, he tried to flee and even tried to attack Asif with a knife. The police quickly surrounded him, and both the suspect and Asif were taken to the government hospital. Riyaz had been seen alive, sparking the authorities’ statement that there was no encounter.
The shooting that led to the fugitive’s capture traced back to the night of October 17. Constable E. Pramod (42), along with his nephew, had been chasing Riyaz over a bike‑theft case. As they tried to arrest him, Riyaz suddenly grabbed a knife and stabbed Pramod. The nephew was hit too, and a pair of Riyaz’s accomplices did the same to a sub‑inspector who attempted to stop them. Pramod was rushed to the hospital but later died. His nephew is still receiving treatment.
After the killing, Director General of Police B. Shivdhar Reddy announced a full‑scale manhunt, stressing the tragedy of losing a dedicated officer. He ordered the Nizamabad Police Commissioner, P. Sai Chaitanya, to set up special teams. Nine teams were deployed to track the suspect—all of them successful.
The police said social‑media rumors of a police firing were false. Instead, the officers confirmed that they had no contact with Riyaz except the capture in Sarangapur, reinforcing that the operation was a swift arrest, not an encounter.
