Punjab Police Busts Cross-Border Arms Smuggling Ring in Amritsar
In a major win for law enforcement, Amritsar police have smashed a dangerous cross-border arms smuggling network. They arrested six key members and seized six high-tech weapons along with Rs 5.75 lakh in hawala cash. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav shared these details on Thursday, highlighting how the operation stopped illegal guns from spreading further.
The arrested suspects include Pargat Singh, Ajaybir Singh, Karanbir Singh, Shri Ram, Mehakpreet Singh, and Dinesh Kumar. The weapons recovered are no joke—one 9mm Glock pistol and four others in .30 and .32 bore, including PX5 models. These smuggled arms were crossing borders and heading to criminal networks.
DGP Yadav explained that Mehakpreet Singh, also known as Rohit, ran the show from India. He took orders from handlers abroad through social media apps. "We caught them in stages, grabbing evidence bit by bit," the DGP said. The team now digs deeper into the syndicate’s links, expecting more arrests and seizures soon.
Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar gave the full scoop. It all started with Pargat Singh’s arrest—he carried two pistols from a border shipment meant for wider distribution. As the probe heated up, officers nabbed Ajaybir, Karanbir, and Shri Ram with another pistol in hand.
The big catch? Kingpin Mehakpreet, who was hiding in Goa. Police recovered three weapons from him. Then came Dinesh Kumar, linked to the money trail. They grabbed him with Rs 5.75 lakh in hawala funds—the dirty cash flowing from arms deals.
This arms smuggling bust underscores Punjab’s tough stance on border threats. An FIR under Section 25 of the Arms Act is filed at Gate Hakima police station in Amritsar.
