In Kolkata, the West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant called an emergency meeting at the state secretariat to hash out safety problems in medical facilities.
The meeting comes after a string of shocking incidents in the last week: a minor was molested inside the state‑run S.S.K.M. Medical College and Hospital, a junior doctor was assaulted in a hospital in Uluberia, and a nurse was attacked at a primary health centre in Mohammad Bazar, Birbhum.
Critics say the state has failed to learn from a 2023 case in which a junior doctor was raped and murdered at R.G. Kar Medical College. The criticism has hit the administration hard, and officials need to act quickly.
During the session, Pawns from all corners of the health system will be present: top health officials, principals and superintendents of medical colleges, district magistrates, police superintendents, the Commissioner of Kolkata Police, and Chief Medical Officers.
A senior health department officer said the meeting will ask every senior officer to examine the current security set‑up and point out where it is weak. The team will also examine how private hospitals can follow the same safety procedures.
The Association of Health Service Doctors has asked Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee—who also runs the health ministry—to set up a dedicated “hospital security force” like the Railway Protection Force. This force would protect both state‑run and private medical establishments across West Bengal.
