Congress leaders turned up the heat on the ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur during an extended meeting of the party’s top decision-making body in Patna on Wednesday. They called for the immediate dissolution of the Manipur state Assembly and fresh elections to bring back stability to the troubled region.
The extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) session, led by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, brought together key figures from across India. Manipur’s voice came through state Congress chief Keisham Meghachandra Singh and Congress Legislature Party leader Okram Ibobi Singh.
Singh didn’t hold back in his address. He pointed out that the ethnic clashes in Manipur have dragged on for more than 29 months without any real fix. He slammed the BJP’s “double engine” government—meaning both state and central levels—for failing to rebuild peace, normal life, and trust between communities.
The Manipur Congress unit is stepping up with a statewide Peace March to push for harmony. Singh stressed the party’s full commitment to ending the turmoil. He also dismissed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Manipur as just a show—no real promises, no solutions, and no hope for locals.
The CWC wrapped up by passing a strong resolution on Manipur. It accused the Prime Minister of overseeing the state’s breakdown for over two and a half years, then spending just five hours there without truly connecting with people. The resolution blasted the central government’s silence and inaction, saying it has only encouraged those behind the hate and violence.
After the meeting, Singh spoke to reporters in Patna and doubled down on his demands. He said President’s Rule in Manipur has totally flopped at restoring peace, so it’s time to dissolve the Assembly and hold new polls. He highlighted the party’s serious push for calm through the upcoming Peace March.
On his X account (formerly Twitter), Singh thanked Kharge, Gandhi, organization secretary K.C. Venugopal, communications head Jairam Ramesh, and all CWC members for spotlighting Manipur in the resolutions.
For context, Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 13, right after former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh quit. The 60-member Assembly is now suspended, but its full term runs until 2027. The ethnic turmoil in Manipur continues to test the state’s fragile peace efforts.
