In the southeast Bay of Bengal, a deep depression is moving fast toward the coast of Andhra Pradesh. Weather officials say it could become a severe cyclonic storm and hit the city of Kakinada and its surroundings on the night of October 28.
What’s happening?
The depression has been traveling at about 8 km per hour for the last six hours and is currently 720 km from Chennai, 790 km from Visakhapatnam and 780 km from Kakinada. Meteorologists expect it to strengthen into a cyclone within the next 12 hours. By Tuesday morning it could become a severe cyclone and strike the Kakinada coast that night.
Wind and rain:
Strong gales of 90‑110 km per hour are forecast along the coast. Rain is expected to be heavy to very heavy in many districts—including Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam and Nellore—starting Monday and continuing into Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department predicts wind speeds of 90‑100 km per hour, with gusts up to 110 km per hour when the storm reaches land.
Preparedness:
The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) has said that nine State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams and seven National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are already in coastal districts. The state government has released emergency money: District Collectors can draw up to ₹19 crore, with ₹1 crore for 12 districts and ₹0.5 crore for the rest.
Collectors are asked to prioritize evacuating residents to relief camps, ensure safe drinking water, food, milk and health checks, and repair roads and irrigation. They should also arrange transport using APSRTC buses and use school or college buildings as temporary shelters if cyclone shelters are full.
Power and safety:
The disaster‑management minister, V. Anitha, urged officials to keep transformers, poles, generators and bulldozers ready for power outages caused by 100 km per hour winds. Heavy advertising hoardings should be removed quickly. Relieving camps will be expanded in the six mandals most at risk in Kakinada district, and residents in coastal villages are encouraged to move ahead of the storm.
Bottom line:
A severe cyclonic storm is expected to hit the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada on the night of October 28. Residents should stay indoors, be ready for strong winds and heavy rains, and follow evacuation orders.
