Amaravati, Oct 27 – Cyclone Montha is threatening Andhra Pradesh’s coast. The storm, expected to hit near Kakinada on Tuesday night, will bring winds of 90–110 km/h and heavy rain across many districts.
Top‑level leadership steps in
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to check on the cyclone’s progress. In a quick X post, the CM thanked the PM for his support and urged residents to follow government instructions and stay safe. “We are on maximum alert,” Naidu added.
Coordinated emergency measures
- Real‑time monitors at the Secretariat’s RTGS Centre are tracking the storm’s movement every hour.
- All municipal and district offices are on 24/7 control‑room duty, keeping lines open with the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority and local networks.
- 11 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and 12 state teams, plus fire crews and marine boats, are ready for rescue, evacuation, and flood relief.
Shelters and supplies
- 260 relief centres in Kakinada district and 140 in Nellore district are stocked with food, milk, water, and medicine for 2–3 days.
- 364 schools are being used as cyclone shelters, and more than 14,000 schools in affected districts will be closed for the precautionary holiday.
- JCBs, power saws, and dewatering pumps are positioned to clear roads and restore power.
Safety for vulnerable people
Pregnant women, the elderly and low‑lying coastal residents have already been moved to safer locations. Beaches are shut and fishermen have been told not to go out to sea.
Financial support
The state has unlocked funds under TR‑27 for rescue, evacuation, medical aid, food, water, sanitation and road clearance. Affected districts can draw extra money as needed.
With red alerts issued for Kakinada, Konaseema, West Godavari, Krishna, Bapatla, Prakasam and Nellore, authorities are urging everyone to stay indoors and keep an eye on official guidance until the cyclone passes.
