Kolkata police reported Thursday that they had found a decomposed body hanging in a house near the Lake Police Station area. The victim, identified as 42‑year‑old Subhashis Chakraborty, also left a handwritten suicide note, the officers said.
The note said that no one was responsible for his death. It seemed clear that Mr Chakraborty had taken his own life on November 1 after a long‑term relationship with a live‑in partner ended.
When police were called to Dhakuria Station Lane, locals complained of a strong odor coming from the house. Officers went inside and discovered the body hanging from the ceiling. They recovered a note that blamed no one for the tragedy.
Investigators learned that Mr Chakraborty had been with his partner for 14 years. The breakup reportedly happened just last week, according to police sources. The woman still visits the house at night and leaves by morning, but there were no plans to marry. Police suspect that the ending of their relationship triggered Mr Chakraborty’s drastic action, and they are looking into whether the note was written to protect her.
Lawyers will be able to question the woman if the investigation requires it. Police are still trying to piece together what happened that night.
The officer on the scene also revealed that Mr Chakraborty’s father, Samar Kumar Chakraborty, had committed suicide years earlier. The mother comes from a pension fund that Mr Chakraborty used to support his living expenses.
