Harshiv Rawat, a senior leader of the Indian National Congress, called for a closer look at the unfortunate death of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who was found dead at his home in Chandigarh on Oct. 7. The police said Kumar likely took his own life, but the case is now under investigation by a new Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Rawat pointed out concerns about rising intolerance within the government. “The bureaucracy is becoming more narrow‑minded,” he said in an interview on Friday. “People in power are breeding an attitude of exclusion based on religion, caste, or language.” He added that the country is suffering as a result of this growing hostility, and that Kumar was a “capable police officer whose life was lost to this very wrong mindset.” His wife has filed a First Information Report (FIR).
Chandigarh police announced on Sunday that a six‑member SIT has been formed to probe the case thoroughly. The team is led by Inspector General Pushpendra Kumar and includes senior officers such as SSP Kanwardeep Kaur and SPICity KM Priyanka. They will examine evidence and witnesses and work under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.
The SIT will try to gather all evidence quickly, and it can bring in additional experts if needed. The investigation aims to determine whether Kumar’s death was self‑harm or if foul play is involved.
The Haryana IAS Officers Association also expressed deep sorrow over the sudden death of the officer. The association praised him for his integrity and dedication to public service. The case is still developing, and police will continue to investigate all angles.
