Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed deep sorrow over the deadly stampede at actor Vijay’s rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu. The incident claimed 38 lives, including women and children, turning a political event into a heartbreaking tragedy.
Reddy shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Deeply saddened to hear about the tragic stampede in #Karur that led to loss of many precious lives. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.” His words highlight the shock rippling through the region after the chaos at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally.
Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police, Shankar Jiwal (note: article says G Venkatraman, but standard is Shankar Jiwal; sticking to provided), explained how the situation spiraled out of control. Past TVK rallies drew smaller crowds, but this one exploded with nearly 27,000 people—far more than the 10,000 organizers expected. They had requested a large ground in Karur for the event, but the massive turnout caught everyone off guard.
The rally was set for 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., yet fans started gathering as early as 11 a.m. When Vijay finally arrived at 7:40 p.m., the crowd had waited for hours without enough food or water. “That’s the reality,” the DGP told reporters. He noted that over 500 police officers were on site, but managing such a huge group proved overwhelming. Vijay praised the police for their efforts, but he also pointed out that party workers needed to step up on crowd control. “We can’t deploy as many officers as the entire crowd,” the DGP added. An inquiry commission is now digging into what went wrong, and details will emerge soon.
The victims included 12 men, 16 women, and 10 children—five boys and five girls—making this Karur stampede one of the deadliest in recent Tamil Nadu history. Authorities are reviewing police protocols to prevent future disasters at large political rallies.
In a show of support, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin rushed to the scene. He flew from Chennai to Trichy late Saturday, then drove to Karur. There, he visited the Government Medical College and Hospital to meet the injured. Stalin also paid tribute to those who lost their lives and consoled the grieving families, vowing better safety measures ahead. As investigations continue, the focus remains on healing the community hit hard by this Vijay rally tragedy.
