International Potato Experts Visit Tripura to Boost Local Farming

A team from the International Potato Centre (CIP) in Lima, Peru, landed in Agartala, Tripura, to team up with the state government’s horticulture department and local farmers. They’re excited about potato cultivation in Tripura, calling it one of India’s top spots for the crop thanks to smart innovations and strong research efforts.

The delegation couldn’t hide their admiration. "We’re thrilled with the hard work from officials and researchers here," they said. "Tripura has turned potatoes into a real success story." They pointed out how new tech, like advanced seed innovations and epicentral rooted cuttings, helps farmers get bigger harvests and better results.

Potato farming in Tripura looks even brighter with ideas for high-value varieties that could sell for more money and boost profits. The CIP experts are keen to chat with Tripura’s horticulture minister about future partnerships. The state government already shows big interest in joining forces with CIP scientists, and they want to bring in experts from all over India to amp up potato research and new ideas.

Their goal? Keep potato production in Tripura growing smarter and more efficient, so farmers see real gains. "We’ll keep supporting from the global science world to improve potato breeding," the team promised.

Leading the visit is Simon Heck, Director General of the International Potato Centre and Senior Director at CGIAR since March 2023. He’s pushing worldwide efforts to grow potato innovation, making this Tripura tie-up a big deal for Indian agriculture.

Just a day before, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha met U.S. Consul General Kathy Giles Diaz at the state secretariat in Agartala. In a post on X, CM Saha shared, "Had an insightful meeting with Ms. Kathy Giles Diaz, U.S. Consul General, Kolkata today at the Secretariat, Agartala." This comes as Tripura ramps up its focus on farming and international collaborations.
